Hi! My name is Mike and I cook healthy, flavorful, in-season food. Whether your goal is to improve your health, entertain friends, learn something new, or just make your days simpler by having someone help out with cooking, I would like to help. I am passionate about good food and helping others discover the power of food to bring wellness into their lives.

My Nutrition Philosophy

I am excited about how food can support health and transform lives. As someone who has found his life and health fully improved by changing my diet, I believe a well-designed eating plan can help you recover from serious illness and chronic disease. And of course, I think these goals can be accomplished with delicious food.

Despite a flood of articles and information about nutrition, there is still a great deal we do not understand about food. Further, our culture tends to oversimplify health problems and seek the “quick fix” solutions. The reality is that it takes intuition and care to solve diet issues. Food allergies are a great example of a topic where many people are confused. I live 99% gluten and casein free, so I am sensitive to these issues and look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with others.

My Background

I have 10 years of corporate human resources experience. It’s where I learned to listen to others and how to partner with them to solve problems – and that is the approach I bring to my food work. However, a series of life events motivated me to bring my cooking skills and passion for health to a new career.

When I was a child, I had an interest in cooking and sharing meals. Making food was a special way to bring people together and elicit expressions of delight. I loved – and still do – the colors, smells, and feel of food. And I was never happier than when I was with people sharing a meal. Along the way toward a 9-to-5 corporate career, though, that fascination faded into the background.

During my graduate school years, I developed some health issues that had no Western solution other than the use of pharmaceuticals. Discouraged, I spent years wavering from resignation, to determination, to renewed faith in the allopathic (Western) medical system. However, conventional treatments always disappointed me. After some time, I became interested in the natural foods movement. I read numerous books espousing the idea that we can heal ourselves with food and it instantly seemed logical and useful. I visited an allergist who, along with the extensive reading I was doing and experimentation with my own diet, helped guide me toward a dietary solution to my health concerns.

Meanwhile, my passion for creating food was re-kindled by the explosion in popularity of natural foods and the increased appreciation in our society for real cooking. At the same time I came to the realization that working with people on food and health was the best way to honor my true self – the self I’d forgotten about all those years ago. All of this led me to enroll in culinary school and live my twin passions of cooking and wellness. I completed my training at one of the only culinary schools in the United States with a nutrition and healing focus. The Natural Epicurean Academy of Culinary Arts is a plant-based cooking school in Austin, Texas, for people like me who value local, in-season, plant-based, and minimally-processed foods – the food that can restore and preserve your health, just like it did for me.
